Understood.org Awarded Grant From 3M to Empower Students With Learning and Thinking Differences Through STEM
NEW YORK, Oct. 29, 2024 – Understood.org, the leading nonprofit dedicated to supporting the 70 million people in the U.S. with learning and thinking differences like ADHD and dyslexia, today announced a new collaboration with 3M focused on making teachers in STEM fields more aware of neurodiversity and reducing its stigma. Powered by a $150,000 grant from 3M, Understood is equipping teachers with the tools and resources to create more inclusive classrooms so that neurodivergent students can thrive in subjects that are often misunderstood to require only innate talent. These include science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
STEM education has the potential to drive economic mobility for families. But for neurodivergent students, it can also be a source of frustration and isolation. Research shows that traditional STEM classrooms often fail to meet the needs of students who learn and think differently. Teachers may overlook or underestimate these students. Many assume that success in STEM is solely based on natural talent rather than a combination of effort, curiosity, and learning through multiple modalities. This can limit opportunities for neurodivergent students, leading to disengagement and dire social-emotional outcomes.
“Neurodivergent students bring unique strengths to the table, and it’s crucial that we create inclusive learning environments where they can flourish,” said Dr. Andrew Kahn, Understood’s associate director of behavior change and expertise. “We’re grateful to be the recipient of this grant from 3M, so we can provide resources that will help teachers not only understand but embrace neurodiversity in their classrooms, empowering all students to realize their potential.”
To address the challenges neurodivergent students face, the initiative will focus on equipping teachers, particularly STEM teachers, with resources, knowledge, and tools developed by Understood’s STEM experts to foster an inclusive learning environment.
Awareness video: Engaging and thought-provoking video to help STEM teachers become more familiar with neurodivergence.
STEM resource hub: A comprehensive, user-friendly digital hub on Understood.org. It offers teachers immediate access to practical tools, step-by-step guides, and downloads. These resources are designed to help teachers implement inclusive practices that accommodate a range of learning styles, so that every student feels supported and engaged in STEM learning.
Teacher microgrants: A $30,000 microgrant program to fund neuro-inclusive learning environments. Teachers can use these grants for many purposes, including professional development, curriculum adaptation, classroom materials, expert consultation, or enriching student experiences through field trips and guest speakers. These grants provide the financial backing teachers need to turn inclusive ideas into actionable change in their classrooms.
“At 3M, we believe that creating access to inclusive learning experiences for neurodivergent students is critical to building a diverse, innovative, and equitable workforce for the future,” said Jackie Berry, senior manager with 3M Community Relations. “We admire the work that Understood is doing to raise awareness and reduce stigma around learning and thinking differences, especially in the classroom. This collaboration is not only about supporting students today, but also ensuring that teachers are empowered to make long-lasting, positive changes in the way STEM is taught.”
In line with Understood’s mission to shape the world for difference, and 3M’s commitment to deliver 5 million STEM and skilled trades learning experiences by 2025, this collaboration represents a significant step toward improving outcomes for underrepresented individuals in STEM. It ensures that more students with learning differences can see a pathway into these crucial fields.
Teachers can access resources immediately on the STEM Resource Hub at understood.org/stem. Teachers interested in applying for microgrants to enhance their neuro-inclusive classrooms can sign up for Understood’s educators newsletter. They’ll get notification when the microgrant application is open, plus more resources to use right away.
