Kristy Baxter, MA
Former Head of School, the Churchill School
Kristy Baxter, MA, began her career in 1973 teaching at the Churchill School and Center, an independent school in New York City for children with learning disabilities. She went on to serve as Churchill’s Head of School and Center from 1988–2008. During these years, she co-founded the Introduction to Independence program at New York Institute of Technology and Camp Northwood, a sleepaway camp for children with learning disabilities in Remsen, New York.
She has served as the president of the Guild of Independent Schools of New York and as a trustee on the board of the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS). She was awarded the Distinguished Education Achievement Award from the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) in 2005.
Baxter retired from Churchill in June 2008 and continues to serve as a member of the board of NCLD and as a commissioner for accreditation for NYSAIS. She also serves on the board of the Stephen Gaynor School, a Pre-K–8 school for children with learning differences in New York City. She holds a master’s degree in special education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a license in supervision and administration from Bank Street College.
