Understood.org is excited to have Deborah Wilson as the organization’s chief people and culture officer. She is leading the evolution of the People function at Understood.org, and in partnership with Understood’s co-presidents, Nathan Friedman, Jenny Wu, and Rahul Rao, Deb is driving forward the development of a healthy and thriving organizational culture, aligned with Understood’s core values and strategic direction. 

Deb brings vast expertise and a successful track record in leadership development, training, and engagement, as well as an inherent passion for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. 

“I’m excited to be a part of Understood’s mission as we tackle a huge opportunity to impact the lives of neurodivergent people,” said Deb. “I’m keen to help lead our efforts in building a vibrant internal culture so that every colleague has an opportunity to thrive, regardless of how they learn and think.”

Deb holds an MBA from Morgan State University and BS in business administration from The Ohio State University. She brings a wealth of experience from various industries. Prior to joining Understood in May, Deb was the global head of talent development at Shutterstock, where she built a new global talent development function, executing strategies to support company and employee growth. Throughout her career, Deb has fostered truly diverse, inclusive, and supportive workplaces. 

Deb is actively involved in her local community. She served three terms on the Montclair NJ Board of Education, holding leadership roles such as president, vice president, and chairman of the Superintendent Search Committee. She’s also a founding member of the board of directors at the Sickle Cell Association of NJ and currently serves on the board of directors of New Beginnings for Tomorrow, a non-profit day program for autistic adults in Fairfield, NJ, where her son is a client.
